Dear Fellow Shareholder,

I am writing to you to share some concerns over the direction that our company has been taking in recent times. For many years Gunns was a small predominantly family-run business that added value to Tasmania's communities. However our company has been on a path of rapid acquisition that has also led to a healthy rise in our share price! Unfortunately...

... this has been at the expense of our Tasmanian forests and the longer-term sustainability of our company. If we are to achieve sustainability in an ecological and economic sense, we will need to manage our resources creatively.

Gunns has the opportunity to position itself at the cutting edge of the market. However, in order to do this we must stop treating our forests as a never-ending quarry from which to reap a short-term reward.

The forests shown on this page are being cleared for export woodchip. This is environmental vandalism and increasingly, economic lunacy. The plight of Tasmania's forests is becoming an issue of international concern. The Tokyo-based Consumers Japan, has expressed grave concern about the adverse environmental impact of old growth woodchipping, and in particular its contribution to global warming and the loss of biodiversity (see the letter from CJ). We may soon face Japanese consumer boycotts of products made from the woodchips that we produce. The economic ramifications from this would be obvious.
