There are alternatives to Nuclear Power.
The Nuclear Industry is often justified by the production of "lifesaving radio-isotopes" which are used in Nuclear medicine. It is a fact that alternative technologies exist for the production of these isotopes (such as the cyclotron) and that 90% of the world's uranium is actually produced for nuclear power. It is often claimed by industry that Nuclear power is a "clean and green" energy source. Any analysis of nuclear energy as clean and green fails to take into account it's legacy, the thousands of tonnes of poisonous radioactive waste which are produced at every stage of the 'nuclear cycle'. This waste is devastating to all life forms on earth and must be contained and closely watched and monitored for thousands of years. As many countries around the world are acknowledging, the future for energy production lies in sustainable energy sources. Germany has announced the phasing out of all nuclear power into the next millennium. Denmark has pledged that by 2020 at least 50% of it's energy will come from renewable sources. Australia is in one of the best positions in the world to be developing alternative, sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar power. With current technologies, wind power is about the same price to produce as coal, and much cheaper than nuclear power. With more research and the commitment to the development of alternative energies it could get even cheaper. Earlier this year two Australian Scientists were awarded the "Australia Prize" for the development of the World's most efficient solar cell. At the same time our governments of the day fail to recognise the potential for alternative energies in Australia and have virtually dumped all Research and Development into renewable energy sources. Our continuation in the production of Uranium for the world's nuclear power and weapons industries is sure to come back and haunt us as the world expects us to take back it's deadly nuclear waste It's time that Australia moved away from the environmentally devastating nuclear industry and into the future.
