Janine Jamel (J-9) Janine

Age 33

Janine has been a practicing artist for the past eight years, having completed two degrees in fine arts, specializing in painting and sculpture. Her work expresses concerns about the industrial wastes of the "consumer capitalist western world", making comment on the abundance and "carelessness that the technological world, deals or doesn't deal with the over use of resources and comparative thoughtlessness about its' waste. Realising that disconnection was part of the problem underlying society's "apathy" toward these problems, she traveled to Jabiluka to unite herself directly with thousands of other concerned citizens at the 'hot spot'. Since returning to Melbourne she has been involved in local deforestation issues and has visited the Goolengook blockade site in east Gippsland. She has now taken to dedicating all her time and energy to raising awareness about the detrimental affects that mining our natural resources has on indigenous people and their land. Having always had the desire to travel around Australia, this camel trek to Billa Kalina will begin many of her dreams that have been waiting to synthesize.

"Society, rightly so, is afraid of considering the consequences of radioactive waste. I hope to help motivate people to dispel the 'she'll be right' attitude and inspire a feeling of responsibility to ourselves, our indigenous people and to our treatment of this amazing land."
