****MEDIA ALERT**** International Day of Indigenous People HUMPS NOT DUMPS ANTI-NUCLEAR CAMEL TREK KICKS OFF When : Monday 9th August International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
Where : Warina Railway Siding,Oodnadatta Track, S.A The Warina railway siding is 104 kms North of William Creek along the Oodnadatta track in the desert of Northern South Australia. Approx 160kms North East of Kupa Piti (Coober Pedy).
Why : In opposition to government plans to dump radioactive waste on the spiritual home of the Kokatha people in northern South Australia.
In response to a call for support from the indigenous women elders of the region, the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta, eight women are embarking on an anti-nuclear camel trek planned to draw media attention and raise community awareness about the impending nuclearisation of Australia’s future. The proposed nuclear dump is an "out of sight, out of mind" approach to dealing with existing nuclear waste and is yet another act of dispossession and genocide against indigenous people, negating the possibility of meaningful reconciliation. What : The official launch of Humps Not Dumps will be marked by a very special meeting between the Humps Not Dumps women and the traditional women elders, the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta. The women will be coming together in a day of cultural exchange, of empowerment and of unification against the poisoning of these sacred lands by the nuclear industry. All Media are invited to attend the launch at Warina Siding on the 9th August. Live radio crosses are particularly invited and will be facilitated via satellite phone connection.
