ANTI-NUCLEAR CAMEL ACTION AT ROXBY DOWNS, S.A.

Tuesday 14th September

The Humps Not Dumps Anti-Nuclear Camel Trek will on Tuesday 14th September hold a protest action at the site of the world's largest Uranium mine, "Olympic Dam" at Roxby Downs in South Australia.

They will be joined in strong opposition to the mine and to plans for a nuclear waste dump in the area by indigenous wowen elders of the region, the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta, and Arabunna elder, Kevin Buzzacott.

In solidarity with the Kokatha and Arabunna people whose country and sacred sites are being desecrated by Western Mining Corporation, the day will be a powerful presence of resistance to the nuclear industry. This will include theatricals, ceremony, sculpture and information for workers.

The Humps Not Dumps women in their thousand kilometre camel trek have been meeting with Aboriginal elders and custodians of the land, and hearing directly of the devastating nuclear effects on their lives, lands and culture.

Most recently the trek has travelled from Lake Eyre South where they have met with Keven Buzzacott and heard of the cultural and environmental impacts of the nuclear industry on Arabunna land. Western Mining Corporation is currently licensed to take 42 million litres of water a day from the Great Artesian Basin to aid them in the processing of uranium at Roxby Downs. The depletion of these ancient underground waters is having a devastating effect on the mound springs in the area, which are unique fragile ecosystems and are sacred to the Arabunna people.

The inspiration for this journey is in support of the wise council of women elders, the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta, who are campaigning strongly against plans for a national radioactive waste dump on their country. The women of the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta express strongly their concerns that a nuclear dump will leak into the underground water and contaminate the waters of the Great Artesian Basin, poisoning the source of all life in the desert.

All media are invited to attend on Tuesday 14th September.
