MEDIA ALERT Humps Not Dumps Anti Nuclear Camel trek is a group of 8 women, 8 camels trekking across the South Australian desert as an act of peaceful resistance against the nuclear cycle, in particular the proposed radioactive waste dump. Today Humps Not Dumps visited one of the more probable of 18 potential sites for the waste dump. The site is located in Purple Downs Station owned by Western Mining company 30 km's south of Roxby Downs. The group were accompanied to the site by Andrew Starkey of the Kokatha people who's traditional lands the proposed site is on. Quote Andrew Starky " This land is traditional hunting grounds for the Kokatha people". Recycled materials from a nearby abandoned tracking station were painted and placed at the drill site as a reminder for those who return to do further testing for the radioactive waste dump. Quote Marc Peckham (Independent Geologist) " The rock types revealed by the RC drill tests at the site show mostly rocks of high permiability, with occasional thin layers of relatively impermiable shales. Therefore there is potential that a radioactive leak in the area could poison local and regional groundwater's." Quote Humps Not Dumps " We have witnessed an abundance of plants and wildlife.... this site should be preserved for future generations to walk and feel the land, the people of Australia should not allow this area to become contaminated by a radioactive dump". |
