South Australia: The Radioactive State

Since the early 1950's South Australia has been the site of much nuclear and military related activities.
It began with the development of Woomera Rocket Range and atomic weapons testing at Maralinga and Emu Fields. The misconception that these sacred desert lands were uninhabited and useless continued the dispossession and genocide that began with invasion. Thousands of Indigenous people were denied access to their country and sickness and death pervaded their communities so that Australia could appease Britain and their war hysteria. The establishment of military communications facility, Nurrungar, in 1971 began military ties with the US war machine and makes South Australia a potential military target. The worlds largest uranium-copper mine at Roxby Downs that will leave the region with the legacy of 160 million tonnes of radioactive waste further threatens the survival of culture and country. And now the Federal Government wants to site a national radioactive waste dump on the same people who have been standing strong in opposition to the nuclearisation of their land for the past fifty years. Aboriginal sovereignty and the wisdom of the oldest living culture must be heard and respected.
