Nurrungar
Nurrungar is a US military communications base in South Australia's north. Established in 1971, with little community consultation, it receives data from US satellites which monitor missile launches and nuclear explosions, relaying it back to the US. The base is situated on a large tract of 'Commonwealth' land and has also been declared a prohibited zone. Nurrungar denies the Kokatha access to their land, acting further to fragment and sever cultural ties with their land. While it is called a joint US-Australian facility Australia has no real control of the base, its only real involvement being the injection of large capital. As it operates under a 'national security' veil of secrecy Australia is rarely aware of its involvement in conflict and war, despite it being a high priority target if the US were involved in nuclear warfare. One nuclear bomb detonated at Nurrungar would see fallout reaching Adelaide within 10-20 hours. Housing a vital part of America's nuclear war machine makes Australia a nuclear state by proxy. Once again military interests override human rights and threaten the wider Australian community who would all suffer in the advent of nuclear attack. Nuclear Issues |
