Survey Rd, January 03

Survey Rd, where we saw hundreds of hectares of old-growth that had been destroyed, giants trees smashed and left as waste, threatened species habitat ruined and rainforest logged. A coupe was in progress, we saw trees fall, understorey bulldozed... welcome to east Gippsland.

Rainforest logging what you see here is called "Mixed Forest"; that is a rainforest understorey beneath senescing eucalypts. You can see the pointed Sassafras trees dominating the understorey, and the occasional Shining Gum in the background. Mixed Forest is listed as a rainforest community requiring protection, but in this case Survey Rd cuts right through it.
A bit further along from here is an exmaple of a stand of pure rainforest, that was logged with no buffer.
