Goolengook Blockade - 'the Basecamp'
Photograph: M. van Gerrevink

This beautiful forest is up for logging. A dedicated group of activists have set up a blockade to protect it and they will not give up easily. The blockade was set up in early January 1997. So far it has been successful - it has not yet been logged. This site also operates as a basecamp from which the group has held other protests against logging in East Gippsland. Over the course of the blockade over 300 people have participated.

The rainforest pictured includes ancient tree ferns, twisting vines and is a rare "overlap" between cool and warm temperate rainforest. This forest is a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to many rare and endangered species. Among the fauna are, Sooty Owls, Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos, Yellow Bellied Gliders, Long-footed Pottoroos, and Black Wallabies. The Government has ignored its own ecological survey report (Lobert, 1991) - which recommended that the site SHOULD NOT BE LOGGED.
